CHILDREN'S
SUPPORT GROUP
The
Children's Support Group was founded on the belief that every child and
teen deserves the opportunity to grieve in a supportive, understanding
and compassionate environment. Our society often fails to understand and
support the needs of children as if those survivors have no
understanding of what has happened or how they feel. |

In the past, the Los Angeles Police Department has focused its support
on the needs of the surviving spouses of employees who die while in
active service with the Department. Following the death of a Police
Officer in 1998, it was discovered that he had been the single parent of
a young eight-year-old son who had no understanding of how his life
would change. This young boy did not have a mother who would assume the
responsibility of his needs. Luckily he had loving grandparents who
stepped in to take care of him.
It was at this moment in time the light bulbs came on. The LAPD (Chief
Parks) realized that they had no system in place to take care of the
grieving needs of surviving children and teens of our fallen officers.
They immediately recognized the need to have a support group in which
children could talk about their grief in a supportive atmosphere
facilitated by adults familiar with the grieving process and in a place
where other children would surround them in similar circumstances.
Currently, we have approximately twelve children and teens who have
requested to join the program.
